Remembrance Day (11/11)
In the UK we call this Remembrance Day, I think in the US you call it Veteran's Day? (Do correct me!)
And well, Firstly I was wondering, who went to a parade or church or remembered it in some way? (just wondering, no right answer) And also, I went to a parade by the War Memorial in my town yesterday morning. I found it very very chilling, the silence really hit me, I found myself quite emotional. I was just wondering what all your view were on the subject, I think Remembrance Day is really important, all the men that died in the First World War (I think the 11th is also a day for other wars too?), it was really awful, I think it's really important that we all remember. But what I found the most upsetting, was a major or colonel or somthing, standing up and speaking of the men from the Regement in my area that had died this year in Afganistan. It just made me think, I mean, I know wars have different reasons and everything, we're not fighting in Afganistan for the same reasons we fought in WW1, but just that, we've not learnt much from the loss of life in the World Wars have we? Surley if that 11th of November is a time to remember those who sacrificed their lives for us, for our freedom and the rights we have today, there is no doubt they were terribley brave men, but I find it terribley sad that we still send men to war to the same fate the men almost a hundred years ago suffered. What do you guys think? I just think, death of innocent people, the men forced to join up in the First World war, who were commanded often very badly and who died in the trenches, well, it's pretty hard to justify their deaths, but even harder, with the hindsight, with that in our history, to send men to the same fate as we did them. Opinions? Experiances of Remembrance Day 2008 or any other year? Who else found it emotional, who found it ironic, who found it cold and impersonal? Whatever, I'm just interesting.

Veterans day in the US is a very special time for me....
I feel strongly for all the American soldiers, past or present. They DIED to give us the freedoms we take for granted now.... So many soldiers are fighting for what is right.....freedom. We need to remember those who die for that special cause. Some Say Freedom is Free Well I tend to Disagree Some say freedom is won Through the Barrel of a Gun My Daddy Faught in Vietnam Went to War with the Viet Cong My Grand dad faught in World War two And Gave is Life for Me and You So tell me Why, why O Why.. Do I keep Fightin On So tell me why why o why Do we Keep Marchin On It was a Dark and Dismal Day Two Planes Crashed into the World Trade Was a Dark and Dismal Day Two plances crashed into thw world trade Tell me why, why o why Did those people have to die Tell me why, why o why Did those families have to cry? Was just after dawn A plane flew into the pentagon Was just after dawn A plane flew into the pentagon Tell me why, why o why Did those soldiers have to die Tell me why why o why Do these tears fill my eyes. Some say freedom is free Well I tend to disagree Some say freedom is won Through the barrel of a gun So I keep fightin on... (We have to sing that cadence sometimes....it's a VERY STRONG theme....and a very sad one at that.) GOD BLESS ALL SOLDIERS. |
