Yeah but we warned that they WILL stick you in a psychiatric hospital for talking to them. Happened to me.

I've personally called many hotlines over the years and never once been put into a place. So if your suicidal and wanting to kill yourself please don't let the fear of them stick you in a psych. ward stop you from calling. A member here JUST lost a friend to suicide, he was young and had his whole life ahead of himself, and now he doesn't. It doesn't ever have to happen like that. Another member lost a friend the same exact way just last year..... Sometimes a psych. stay may be what you need, but these anon. places are rarely the ones who can put you in. If you are that afraid, go to a pay phone, block your number, do anything, but don't just do nothing....... Once you commit suicide, it's done, you never have a 2nd chance. Calling a hotline for help is always a solution, it's not something to be afraid of. There are internet places you can email as well, and they don't turn you in either. I know a lot of people who use them, and I know that no matter What you say to them, they don't turn you in. Bottom line is, Reach out for help, don't be afraid, if you are feeling suicidal or you want to kill yourself, there IS someone out there who wants to and who will help you. Or you can always pm one of the Mods here and we will help you find someone to talk to. We do it often...

I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound like I was trying to tell people not to call. It's just, when I called they did something along those lines, so I just wanted to warn people about...I don't know, that sometimes it's not just talking and stuff. (I would have appreciated knowing that in advance)
But apart from that I have been on a lot of psych wards, and they really aren't that big of a deal...most of them are ok. Like Done With It Said, there are plenty of places that won't section you, that will just give you advice and places to go to get the treatment and help that you need. If in doubt about these hotlines, and you feel like a hospitilisation isn't really necessary...do call from a payphone or something similar. I'm really sorry about my post...I will edit it if you want. Last edited by Relen; 08-12-2007 at 06:05 am. |

No worries sweetie, and you don't have to feel sorry. I'm sorry that wasn't what I meant, I wasn't trying or meaning to jump on you at all, not sleeping much and having a hard time w/words lately Just like you said didn't, want anyone to be afraid to call. Honestly you are the first person I've heard of them doing that too, and I'm sorry it upset you. If you call and say you are suicidal and that you are going to committ suicide now, I guess there is a difference by law, I don't know all the laws (or what or how or why they made you go in)... Oh wait, your from Ireland right? That may be the difference.... In the states I believe most of these lines are so busy, they usually just don't have the time or money or educational skills to section people who call. (((Relen)))

I wish my son's friend would have called a hot line. My son is 22 years old. One of his good friends from kindergarten, our neighbor down the road, just shot himself. If we would have know he was hurting, if only we could have helped, but we didn't. He always wore a smile on the outside.
The results of suicide are devastating. The young man grew up around my house. I never would have dreamed he would have taken his own life. His poor family are devastated. His mother collapsed when she heard the news and had to be taken to the hospital. The results are very dark and gruesome and his family has to live with that. I pray that time will wipe away the vision. Please, please, if anyone ever has thoughts of ending your life, please reach out for help. Tell someone, call, talk with a friend. Bad times pass. I have overcome many. I never imagined I could get past them, but I have. I believe their is a solution for every problem. Hang on, hang on and don't give up on life. Nothing is worth taking your own life, nothing. I can't help but think of the old quote "this too shall pass." I believe, truly believe that wholeheartedly. Joe touched many hearts. He will be remembered and missed, but the pain from the fact that he gave up on himself will always cast a shadow on his memories. It is such a waste, such a shame. RIP

Thanks for that Muse. It is so very true.
My uncle killed himself also. His absence is a constant presense in our life. I know the darkness of feeling suicidal, but like Muse said it will pass. You just have to hold on, Reach out to someone, anyone. There is always someone who WILL get you through that moment. People in your life do ALWAYS love you even when you think they don't, especially when you think they don't. When it does become too much, just wait for 24 more hours is what I always tell myself, wait until you are thinking more clearly and talk to someone else about what is going on in your head, sometimes that is all it takes. There is always someone out there who cares. I promise you that. Pick up the phone, or email someone, you don't have anything to lose, and everything to gain. You'll surprise yourself by what can happen if you just reach out a little bit. ![]()

There were many times I hated my life, myself. What I really hated was my situation I had gotten myself into. I didn't know how to get out. I didn't want to die, but in reality, I thought it would be easier than fighting. I was overwhelmed with all the bad, I couldn't find the good.
When I realized what I was doing, drinking, was killing me, I wanted to live. I wanted to find a solution, but I didn't have the solution. The great part is, others did. They helped me and showed me the way. Today, I'm happy to be alive and thriving. There is a solution. All we have to do is find it! Never give up!!!

Wow, that is alot of what goes through my head when I get suicidal, or that is the beginning part of it anyway, then it trickles into a downward spiral from there. I've had to learn, and relearn, and then learn again how to reach out and let others help me. It is so hard for me to ask for help, I honestly really don't even know how sometimes, but all you have to do is pick up the phone, or send an email. leave a note, I hear the same thing all the time, I don't know how to ask for help, you do know how, Just do it. Before you take your life, you have to ask for help first. You owe it to yourself and everyone around you.. Don't worry about what people are going to think, just reach out and ask. And if someone lets you down, it may happen, it does happen, keep going, ask someone else. Just don't give up... People will love you more for it in the end. People like to feel needed. And like Muse said someone will help you find the way. I guarantee you. ![]()
